Right, I have just stumbled across this conundrum on a facebook fanpage and can't figure it out!

QUOTE
Two planes take off at the same exact moment. They are flying across the Atlantic. One leaves New York and is flying to Paris at 500 miles per hour. The other leaves Paris and is flying to New York at just 450 miles per hour. Which one will be closer to Paris when they meet?

Apparently, the answer is;

QUOTE
They will both be the same distance from Paris when they meet!

Can someone explain this?

I'm lost. Surely if they both take off at the exact same time and the plane travelling from NY is going 50 mph faster than the one on the journey to NY the first one will be closer...

Unless of course, they mean "meet" in a mid-air colllison, in which case the answer's obvious, but...?

The speed is irrelevent. Whenever they meet they will be the same distance from Paris, New York, or any other location in the world.

they will be the same distance away since it does not matter the speed or distance travelled by the planes.

if the meet they are both at the exact same distance from paris despite the original location

I was over-complicating the issue it seems. I was more looking at how far they'd both be from their repsective starting points for some reason!

A better question would be "How startled will the captain be when someones head explodes through his arse, if they meet?"

Quite a simple riddle, tbh. But I do know what you mean about over-complicating them.

If someone tells me a riddle and I get it wrong, I will vehemently argue why my train of thought in deciding the answer was the correct one, probably until I'm blue in the face.

Time was the dimension I decided to add to make the riddle more complicated than it was too!

(assume they are colliding), according to ur question its given that they meet, think it like this- 'when they meet, the two planes become one.Now since the two planes become one, u just forget that u r talking about two planes. now that plane (1st plane + 2nd plane) will definitely be having equal distance from any part of the world. not just plane, but any single object will have a particular distance from any part of the world.

in this question, speed needs no use. it's just for confusing u. hope u understand x
cheers xx
